image Online Labs for Schools
The Online Labs is based on the idea that lab experiments can be taught using the Internet, more efficiently and less expensively. The labs can also be made available to students with no access to physical labs or where equipment is not available owing to being scarce or costly. This helps them compete with students in better equipped schools and bridges the digital divide and geographical distances. The experiments can be accessed anytime and anywhere, overcoming the constraints on time felt when having access to the physical lab for only a short period of time. The features include; Content aligned to the NCERT/CBSE curriculum. Physics and Chemistry Labs for Class 9 and 10. Interactive simulations, animations and lab videos. The concepts and understanding of the experiment. The ability to perform, record and learn experiments - anywhere, anytime, and individualised practice in all areas of experimentation. The 'learning-enabled assessment' through Online Labs facilitates in the assessment of; the procedural and manipulative skills of the experiment, the concepts and understanding of the experiment and a student's reporting and interpreting skills.

image Kerala-born student strikes gold with cancer research
Kerala-born student strikes gold with cancer research Arjun said his vision was to help science develop a nano-bullet to defeat cancer. He showed how an antibiotic could overcome the defences cancer deployed against therapy and make the treatment more effective. These bullets were formed by gold nanoparticles that, when injected into a patient, accumulated in cancerous tumors. Using light, the gold nano particles rapidly heated up in the tumors, killing only the cancer cells.

image Google Glass to let you play your favourite song
Google Glass to let you play your favourite song To sell Glass, its augmented-reality form of eyewear, Google has already tried to make it a fashion accessory and a must-have video device for any parent or skydiver. Now it is also presenting this $1,500 piece of wearable technology as a way to interact with music. On Tuesday, Google will unveil a set of features for Glass to search for songs, scan through saved playlists and listen to music in high fidelity. This canbe done while a user is wearing the lensless frames, which respond to vocal commands and have a small computer and transparent projection screen above the right eye. When Glass boots up, it will display "listen to" among its standard voice commands -"take a picture" and search for a term on Google - and let a wearer name a song or artist and then stream that music through Play, Google's media and apps hub. Users can link their Play accounts to have access to playlists and song recommendations based on what they have listened to in the past. Google is also introducing a set of earbud headphones designed for Glass, which will be available by the end of the month for $85. Sound Search, a feature introduced to Glass two months ago, actsShazam or SoundHound by identifying a song playing in the vicinity. "With these new features, we're now building a great music experience on Glass, whether you're a classical music professor, an acclaimed sound engineer and hip-hop producer, or someone who wants to listen to their favorite tunes anytime, anywhere," Ed Sanders, the director of marketing for Google Glass, said in a statement. The features expand the practical uses of Glass, a product that was announced last year and released to early users this spring. The device has already been the subject of wide debate - not only about whether it will catch on with consumers, but also whether Glass represents an invasion of privacy. Asidehelping Glass to market itself, the features could help publicize Google's streaming music offerings, including Google Play MusicAccess, its Spotify-like subscription service, which have been slow to gain traction with consumers. A high-end technology product with a connection to music is already seen as a marketing angle with potential. The music industry is eagerly awaiting Beats Music, a subscription servicethe makers of Beats by Dr. Dre headphones. For now, only Google's music services are available on Glass, but others are expected to be introduced. Part of Google's pitch for Glass is that its voice commands and easily visible display will free usersstaring down at their smartphonesthe time. Young Guru, a record producer and DJ who has worked with starsJay-Z, Beyonce, Rihanna and Ludacris, agreed wholeheartedly with that assessment. A promotional video for Glass shows Young Guru using the eyewear to order food in Spanish, and to identify a Latin-flavored song playing overhead, tracking down a vinyl record of the song and then spinning the record in the studio. "It's an immense timesaver, and a great tool to make the world that much cooler, and realize some of the dreams we had as kids," Young Guru said in an interview on Monday. "Forof us who grew up watching 'Star Trek,'" he added, "this is sort of the beginning of the holodeck."

Biometrics researchers see world without passwords You may never need to memorize another password. That's the goal of researchers at Purdue University's International Center for Biometrics Research. Stephen Elliott is the director of international biometric research at Purdue University in Indiana. He says iris and fingerprint scans as well as facial and voice recognition are just a few of the tools that improve security while making lives easier. His basement lab is a placeemerging biometric technologies are tested for weaknesses before they can go mainstream. Biometrics is already in use at one local restaurant. Chris Smith, assistant manager of KFC in West Lafayette, Indiana, says workers punch in by putting their finger on a fingerprint scanner attached to their cash register.

image Beware, camera, microphone can reveal your smartphone PIN
A smartphone's PIN can be revealed by its camera and microphone, researchers have warned. Using a programme called PIN Skimmer a teamthe University of Cambridge found that codes entered on a number, only soft keypad, could be identified. According to the BBC, the software watches your face via the camera and listens to clicks through the microphone as you type. The tests were carried out on the Google Nexus-S and the Galaxy S3 smartphones. The report's authors Prof Ross Anderson and Laurent Simon said that they demonstrated that the camera can be used maliciously. The research found that the microphone is used to detect 'touch-events' as a user enters their PIN. In effect, it can 'hear' the clicks that the phone makes as a user presses the virtual number keys, the report said. When the authors tried to work out four-digit PINs the programme was successful more than 50% of the time after five attempts. With eight-digit PINs the success rate was 60% after 10 attempts. The researchers said that to prevent a PIN being identified is to use a longer number. Beware, camera, microphone can reveal your smartphone PIN But the complete way to get rid of passwords altogether and using fingerprints or face recognition are offered as more drastic solutions, the report added.
