What Is It

Agricultural scientists or agronomists as they might be called, study and teach crop production and soil management. It is a broad term encompassing crop physiology and management, soil science, plant breeding, microbiology, biotechnology and other life sciences related to plants.

Qualification

BSc. with Biology or Agriculture followed by MSc. or PhD in required field.

Scope

They are hired in universities and research institutes for crop research and development. They are hired as well by seed companies and in government departments for service extention to farmers

 

Plant Breeder

What Is It

Plant breeding is the manipulation of plant species to create desired properties (genotypes) for specific purposes. The process involves interbreeding of individual plant species through controlled pollination, genetic engineering and finally the selection. Plant breeders are constantly involved with developing improved varieties of plants in relation to size, quality, yield and resistance to disease.

Qualification

BSc. with biology or Agriclture followed by MSc. or PhD in Plant breeding.

Scope

Plant breeders have ample growth opportunities in Agricultural research organizations, Government as well as private universities.

 

Plant Pathologist

What Is It

Plant pathology is the science of diagnosing plant diseases (not including the damage caused by insects or mammals). They study and deal with plant disease and their control in various climates, geographical regions and varied soil types.

Qualification

BSc Agriculture and then Masters/PhD is required.

Scope

Plant pathologists are hired by universities for research work and for farmer support schemes. They are also hired by agencies and research institutions offering diseases identification services to the farmers

 

Agricultural Journalism

What Is It

This area covers farm reporting for newspapers, market reporting, publications, magazines radio, television, advertising, exhibiting and training. It combines the knowledge of agriculture and journalism to make it dynamic job profile.

Qualification

One needs to have an in-depth knowledge of agriculture to write in detail about agricultural sciences, researches, developments and at the same time must have the skill to communicate with the farmers and the common man. BSC agriculture and masters in Journalism is supposed to be a perfect combination.

Scope

They are hired by agricultural journals, government departments to communicate the necessary information to the farmers, different media to publish or broadcast information for different interest groups.
